Ask and Answer Wine Questions

Where's the best place to buy a wine refrigerator?

Are there any second hand dealers? Must have brands? Best size for a stand alone unit?

  • Try a "Wine refrigerator store".

  • I have been looking into buying one for myself as well and as Internet sellers go BeverageFactory.com has some good prices. But there are tons of other sites as well..including the big chains like Target etc...have some as well.

  • I was originally thinking of getting a massive wine fridge for all my wine, but I came to the conclusion that I would likely outgrow whatever size I got long before I expected to... so really what I need is a wine cellar. I've decided to convert a closet in my house to a cellar, just haven't done it yet so now it lives in the basement. But... that doesn't exclude the wine fridge. I have an 18 bottle wine fridge upstairs in my kitchen for my current "drinking supply." I put here bottles that I plan on drinking within the next few weeks. I try to keep it full, and move things between the "cellar" and the fridge when I decide I want something soon... I got mine at the Wine Enthusiast... nice little 18 bottle thing that looks great and fits in my cupboard.

  • After looking for quite awhile, we found some great recommendations for a 100 bottle dual zone fridge from Home Depot. (HDC100) We live in a slab on grade home so did not have a basement option. We really love our wine cellar! Got free delivery to boot! Still have yet to fill it but with a few good sales, that will change. Pretty quiet, each door has a light and a lock. Some champagne & Pinot Noir bottles reduce the capacity a tad. It is currently out of stock but has had great reviews. Look for it when back in stock.

  • I bought my small (50 bottles) at the Great Indoors which is a Sears design store. As Gary said, buy at least a 100 bottle cooler if you have the room. It was on sale for 150 bones which is well worth it.

  • Gary is 100% in the bigger is better category. My experience...I bought a 50 bottle, in 6 months I had 80 bottles crammed into it. So I bought a 480 bottle Vinotemp, in 4 months I'm at 320 bottles (including pending 05 futures), so by the time they arrive next year I'm probably screwed again. It's probably time for a locker for my long term stuff. Anyway I got a Vinotemp 500 EC (upgraded 2500 btu motor), and I am very happy with it. My buddy has the 1500 btu motor, while it works okay we can definately tell the difference. My garage approaches 90 on the hottest of days and I've never opened it up with the thermometer reading above 60 (temp is set at 55). I bought it from Costco, and I hosestly think it is one of the best QPR out there for wine fridges.

  • Before I built a small cellar off of our kitchen, I used to store wine in 25 cu ft freezers. We called them man caves. You either adjust the thermostat to keep wine around 57 degrees and/or you buy a bottle sensor which controls the temperature by turning the freezer on and off. You can buy a new freezer for $400 on sale and store over 100 bottles of wine. Freezers are really well insulated and can be place in a garage. It ain't pretty, but if's effective.

  • What about the big Vinotheque ($5k - $10k) jobbers, that hold several hundred bottles? They look like a wooden cabinet with glass doors, very nice. I'm seriously shopping for this. Any thoughts? Any experience?

  • A place with a great selection is beveragefactory.com -- they have the vinotemp economy line which gives you bang for buck (up to a 700 bottle unit). They have pretty much all brands and will match the best price you can find, even web-based stores. Also...if you decide to go the closet or wine room/basement route, racks at bellacor.com (pine or redwood) are the same that they sell at Wine Enthusiast and IWC, but shipping is included and they are less expensive to begin with. You could do racking and then get a ChillR cooler (also available at places like beveragefactory). Good luck!

  • Vinotemp sells refurb units on ebay, i've got the 60 bottle one for I think $300 or so...If you don't mind that it's a little banged up (sticking it in a back-room corner, or building it into something), it works great.

  • Got a vinotemp that holds about 350 bottles. Great unit. Only problem is that I have many Pinot bottles that are too large for the racking system which is designed for Bordeaux style bottles. I have had it for a good 10 + years and find that a reserve of 350 is plenty. I'd rather drink wines too young and find replacements than have a cellar full of old wines past their prime.

  • Thanks for all the advice Vaniac peeps. Thanks to Gary V to getting me some responses! I just got a Haier 12 bottle holder from someone on craigslist today for $50 (did I get burned?). I'm keeping the rest of my bottles in my frigde, for now, until the housing market bottoms out and I buy a house somewhere in Sonoma County. Sorry I couldn't meet up for the Napa weekend, I was in Tahoe... Dave Dave

  • Too good to be true? Wine Refrigerator (Sears Kenmore) - $100 (noe valley) Reply to: sale-399600924@craigslist.org Date: 2007-08-17, 4:18PM PDT This is the least expensive way to keep your wine cool. Kenmore Refigerator (66" x 32" x 27" D) and a WineStat Thermostat. The refigerator will hold 125 Bottles!!!!. Your not going to find a more efficient wine refrigerator with this type of capacity. The refigerator plugs into the WineStat. The WineStat has a thermocouple that is inserted into a bottle. Set the WineStat to your desired temperature (53 to 55 F) and good to go. Or if you are looking for second refrigerator (no freezer) this is a great product by Sears Kenmore Gotta love craigslist... I just don't know if I can move an entire fridge. Dave

  • I have a Samsung 29-bottle unit, and I'm pretty pleased with it because it has a digital thermostat, and red and white wine presettings. BUT, Gary is absolutely right. Buy the biggest that you can afford or build a cellar room in the basement. A big unit uses a lot less electricity than two small units like mine. AND, get real into wines, and you will have the same problem that we all have.. ROOM!

  • If you live in the Los Angeles area Vinotemp has a scratch and dent warehouse in Long Beach - brand new units that are still under warranty but have slight (sometimes major) cosmetic defects. I got a beautiful, sixty bottle, stainless, front venting unit from them from for just three hundred bucks. But, do NOT, and I mean DO NOT, buy a Vinotemp fridge from Beveragefactory.com. They charge even more than the Vinotemp show room does, and you can find Vinotemp stuff on Amazon, at Target, etc. Beveragefactory.com is a NO NO!!!

  • Go with Gary's first response if you have the space. A passive room in the cellar if you are in the Northeast Vigilant makes kit wine racks that can be shipped with some simple assembly required. 62-63 degrees in august. Mid 50's in the winter. I started with a 120 bottle wine fridge and filled it in 6 months. The compressor was replaced after 2 years. It was a good start, but plan to go bigger if you catch the bug.

  • Note there is a difference between a refrigerator and a cellar....the cellar will maintain humidity as well. Wine cellars are typically in the thousands of dollars (Vinotheque, Le Cache). I have a Le Cache 2400 and love it.

  • I bought a 60 bottle "scratch and dent" unit from Vinotemp(http://www.vinotemp.com). It had some small cosmetic issues, but all on the sides, so once installed under a counter, you can't tell. I got a great deal on it and have had it for 3 years now, works great, especially for someone in a condo where you don't really have the choice of building a cellar. I will probably upgrade eventually, but it has satisfied my needs up till now. There Gary, I commented, so get off my back.

  • Another good place to check for sales and sometimes free shipping on certain models is CompactAppliance.com. We got a 54-bottle Avanti model from them about a year ago and have been very happy with it. I would definitely look for something with a digital temp control. I had a Danby model at first with a Min-Max dial, and at the very lowest cooling setting, it was far too cold for reds still (about 45 degrees at the bottom). My fridge now is all reds, with whites in a rack at room temp until they go into our kitchen fridge before drinking.
