Ask and Answer Wine Questions

Where to go in Sonoma County?

I am a Wine Library TV devotee from London, England. I'm visiting Sonoma County for the first time in October and I was wondering which vineyards I should check out? Does anyone have any recommendations? Does anyone have any tips for visiting Sonoma? Restaurants they'd recommend? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Really you can't go wrong almost anywhere. I just got back from a trip to Napa and had the books and the TV shows suggestions. But, the BEST suggestions came from the lady that ran our bed and breakfast and the people staying there in the other rooms. Have a few that get you curious but ask the local people. Keep your itinerary spontaneous but do the things you have caught your attention from the research. If you do a tour, call ahead. But you could only do one and get the idea. Sorry I am not offering specifics but you'll find some gems no one has heard of. Enjoy!

  • This is just a quickie response. . .I'll work up more detail soon. . .the Sonoma wineries are among my favourites. . My old stamping grounds. . .and, I have several that are sort of "off the radar" that are excellent and are operated by some very nice people. You can drop a note to my real e-mail also and I can offer you some restaurants etc that are easily within "reach" of the wineries. I currently live within a stone's throw of the Shenandoah Valley wineries . . .Amador County. . .the California Gold Rush region. . .also EXCELLENT and off the beaten path. Brian expert@volcano.net

  • Husband and I just went, and we were clueless too! We enjoyed most and have heard others have as well: Restaurants - Brix in Yountville, Calistoga Inn in Calistoga; Vineyards - Larkmead (appt. only), Chalk Hill, Ferrari Carano. If you want to break the bank on an inn, stay at Chateau de Vie in Calistoga. Fantastic hospitality and views. Comfortable rooms. Also: http://www.sonomacounty.com/what-to-do/wineries
